Dec. 1st - 31st, 2015

Here we are in December --- that wonderful month marking the end of our calendar year, as well as a time of special celebrations.  Beginning with Hanukkah, or the Festival of Lights, followed by Christmas, the commemoration of Christ's birth, and Kwanzaa, the observation of the importance of family, community and culture, the month culminates with New Year's Eve, the threshold for things yet to come. This is a time of seasonal decorations, spiritual observations and reunions, featuring good food and drink, warm feelings, and giving and receiving of gifts.  The Yule season is a festive remembrance of times past and present, as well as an anticipation of times ahead.  Enjoy the season! Make this a December to remember.  And, when possible, take time to work a puzzle or two from this month's selection or the archives provided.  Happy Holidays!

New puzzle entries are now posted every Mon., Wed., & Fri. of each week.

Happy Holidays to all of our faithful players!

Oct. 1st - 31st, 2015

October is the harbinger of change in the northern hemisphere.  Indian Summer sets in briefly with warm days and crisp nights.  Trees put on their color extravaganza, an annual arboreal finale, as we begin to concentrate on creature comforts in preparation for the colder days ahead.  We celebrate Columbus Day and Halloween, perhaps while curled up by a crackling fire; an excellent setting for working on a few crossword puzzles.  Please click below for a current selection or browse the archives listed to the right with more than 1300 additional choices for your puzzling pleasure.

New puzzle entries are now posted every Mon., Wed., & Fri. each week.

Monday, August 3, 2015

Aug. 1st - 31st., 2015

Named by the Romans to honor their emperor Augustus, August represents the height of summer in the temperate zones of the northern hemisphere.  Although the longest days of the year have passed, the hottest days remain.  Strangely, it is the only month of the calendar year not to have a national U.S. holiday.  The Anglo-Saxons referred to August as "Weod monath" or "Weed month" because it is the period when plant growth is most active.  It also represents one of the busiest tourism months and a time when most workers enjoy a vacation.  Away or at home, remember to find a cool spot, spread out, and enjoy your daily crossword puzzles.  And, remember the archives to the right contain hundreds of additional entries for your puzzle pleasure.

Wednesday, July 1, 2015

July 1st - 31st, 2015

July has arrived, and with it the second half of our year begins.  Named for Julius Caesar, it once was the fifth month of the year, but was moved to become our seventh month and acquired an extra day!  In the northern hemisphere it begins the hottest season, known familiarly as "the dog days of summer".  It also represents a relatively drier time of year with flowers in abundance that crave the warmth.  Beyond being "National Hot Dog Month", July is undoubtedly best recognized in the U.S. by the celebration of Independence Day on the 4th of the month, with fireworks displays, family picnics and barbeques, baseball, and time away from work at favorite leisure spots.  As you enjoy the summer activities, remember to squeeze in some time for your mental exercises and crossword puzzles.  These are a great way to start a day at breakfast or end a day after supper.  Happy puzzling!

New puzzle entries are now posted every Mon., Wed., & Fri.

June 1st - 30th, 2015

June signals the approach of mid-year and the beginning of Summer in the northern hemisphere.  It is the end of the school year for many students or the end of a study program and graduation, plus it heralds the beginning of the traditional vacation season between Memorial Day and Labor Day in the United States.  Named for the Roman goddess Juno, known as the goddess of marriage, this month is looked upon as the best for couples to tie the knot!  We look forward to more daylight hours as the longest day approaches in the northern hemisphere and delight in the abundance of greenery and flowers, especially the roses.  Major holidays this month are Flag Day and Father's Day.  Enjoy the season and remember to continue playing crossword puzzles for better mental health, as well as the entertainment factor.  Current entries are posted below and the archives, listed to the right, contain over 1300 additional selections to choose from!

May 1st - 31st, 2015

May, generally, is one of he most beautiful months in the northern hemisphere; with any traces of ice and snow mostly gone.  Named for Maia, the Roman goddess of Spring and growth, May is the harbinger of sprouting gardens, blooming wild flowers, the greening of trees and grasses, the building of birds' nests and our desire to spend more time outdoors.  Events celebrated during the month include Cinco de Mayo, the Kentucky Derby, Mother's Day, Armed Forces Day, and concludes with Memorial Day.  Take time to enjoy this gentler season as well as work in time for some crossword puzzles.  Breakfast is the perfect time to stimulate your mental faculties, but you may prefer to defer playing until there is time to relax at day's end.  Either way, check out the daily offerings below, and, if not a regular player, browse the archives to the right for hundreds more puzzles to do.  Even those who are regular players may enjoy replaying some of these choices.

New puzzle entries are posted every Monday, Wednesday and Friday

Jan. 1st - 31st, 2015

January is, quite appropriately, the threshold to the new year, so named after the Roman god Janus, often referred to as the "Lord of Beginnings".  He was always pictured with a face that looked backwards and forwards at the same time.  Thus, January is a time of reflection and new resolution, a time of building on the past and planning for the future.  We hope this new beginning ushers in a period of opportunities and accomplishments for each of our puzzle players and that you will be blessed with good health and happiness. Happy New Year!

New puzzle entries are now posted every Mon., Wed., & Fri. each week.
