February, together with January, were the last two months to be added to the
Roman calendar, since Romans originally considered Winter a "monthless" period.
Today we know February as the shortest month, with only 28 or 29 days, depending
on leap year. But, at certain intervals in history it had been shorter still
with only 23, 24 or 27 days! During the month we observe Groundhog Day,
Valentine's Day, Presidents' Day, and, all month long,
celebrate Black History Month. In the northern hemisphere, we look for
moderating temperatures and the return of Spring, while in the southern
hemisphere, just the opposite: a turn toward Autumn and cooler weather. In
either hemisphere we encourage you to spend some leisure time solving a
crossword puzzle or two. It's good for the mind! Enjoy this month's offerings
and also visit the archives when time permits for more than 600 additional challenges.
