Feb. 16th - 28th, 2011

February, together with January, were the last two months to be added to the Roman calendar, since Romans originally considered Winter a "monthless" period.  Today we know February as the shortest month, with only 28 or 29 days, depending on leap year.  But, at certain intervals in history it had been shorter still with only 23, 24 or 27 days!  During the month we observe Groundhog Day, Valentine's Day, Chinese New Year, Presidents' Day, and, all month long, celebrate Black History Month.  In the northern hemisphere, we look for moderating temperatures and the return of Spring, while in the southern hemisphere, just the opposite: a turn toward Autumn and cooler weather.  In either hemisphere we encourage you to spend some leisure time solving a crossword puzzle or two.  It's good for the mind!  Enjoy this month's offerings and also visit the archives when time permits.
